What are the Bazi Plague and the Dar Kosis?

Several weeks ago, I found myself in the city of Genesian Port, reflecting on the devastating impact of the Bazi Plague and Dar-Kosis this year that I had witnessed during my travels. The memories of the abandoned ruins of Vonda, Lara, and Sais are still vivid in my mind, each city bearing the scars of these relentless diseases.

Bazi Plague: The Bazi Plague, a deadly and rapidly spreading disease, left a trail of destruction in its wake. Plague symptoms were unmistakable: pustules erupted all over the body, and the whites of the eyes turned a sickly yellow1. The afflicted suffered from high fevers, severe pain, and a rapid decline in health. The lethality of the plague was staggering, with up to 40% of the infected population succumbing to the disease within weeks2.

Dar-Kosis: Dar-Kosis, also known as the Holy Disease or Sacred Affliction, presented a different but equally harrowing challenge. This incurable wasting disease caused severe disfigurement and debilitation3. The afflicted, known as the Afflicted Ones, developed lesions and experienced a gradual wasting away of their bodies. The disease was sacred, and those suffering from it were cursed by the Priest-Kings3. In Sais, the sight of the Afflicted Ones, isolated and living in colonies away from the evacuated general population, was a somber reminder of the disease’s impact. In Vonda and Lara, there was evidence that the Physicians’ Caste worked tirelessly to manage the outbreak, but the speed at which the plague spread outpaced their efforts. The cities were quarantined, and the uninfected were evacuated to prevent further spread. When we saw the ruins those left behind in the quarantine were all dead, their bodies ravaged by wild urts and packs of forest sleen.  The Initiate Caste played a significant role in dictating the isolation protocols, viewing the disease as a divine punishment3.

Advanced Medical Equipment: The advanced medical equipment used by the Physicians’ Caste is a gift directly from the Priest-Kings themselves4. These technologically advanced beings provide the equipment and pharmaceuticals through the Initiate Caste, who act as intermediaries4. The Initiates not only transport this advanced equipment but also maintain it, ensuring that the Physicians can use it effectively4. Some of the advanced equipment includes:

Diagnostic Machines: These devices can quickly identify diseases like the Bazi Plague and Dar-Kosis, allowing for rapid response and treatment4.

Portable Isolation Units: Used to quarantine infected individuals, these units help prevent the spread of highly contagious diseases4.

Advanced Surgical Tools: These tools enable Physicians to perform complex surgeries with precision, even amid an epidemic4.

During my time in Genesian Port, I received empirical information about the evacuation of Thentis. The city, perched high in the Thentis Mountains, was the first to fall this season. The Lost City, an ancient settlement near the farside of Boswell Pass, had been repopulated earlier in the summer. However, the plague found its way there, and Thentis had to be evacuated. The uninfected population was moved to safer regions, and the city was quarantined. The Physicians’ Caste reported that the disease spread rapidly, and despite their best efforts, containment was impossible.

As I pen down these observations, I am reminded of the resilience of our people. Despite the devastation, there is hope. The Physicians’ Caste continues to work on finding a cure, and the Initiate Caste provides spiritual guidance to those affected. The ruins of Vonda, Lara, and Sais stand as a testament to our struggle, but also to our determination to rebuild and survive.

May the Priest-Kings watch over us and grant us the strength to overcome these trials.
