Gorm Runo, Master of House Runo

By Arealius the Sailor, Scribe of Port Olni

26th Day, 11th Month, Year 10,175 Contasta Ar

My quill scratches across the parchment as I recall my conversation with Gorm Runo, Master Slaver of House Runo. His story, a tapestry woven with threads of destiny and determination, began not with a grand adventure, but with a simple, worn leather-bound box. It was a parting gift from his nephew, Thorold, a young merchant seaman who sailed the Gorean seas on the round ship "Kairos."

Before embarking on a fateful voyage, Thorold entrusted Gorm with his most treasured possessions: a diary detailing his dreams of captaining his own vessel, and meticulous charts of the Gorean mainland coast. These weren't just maps; they were a window into the vast, intricate world of Gorean trade, revealing hidden coves and established routes.

Gorm's family hailed from Kassau, a northern Gorean city that was a fascinating blend of rugged Torvaldsland influence and classical Greco-Gor architecture. House Runo, his family's thriving merchant house, was a force to be reckoned with. They cultivated high-quality Gorean grains and sul, brewed fine meads, distilled potent sul paga, and traded extensively with the Torvaldslanders from the arctic north. With such a massive operation, the slave trade was a natural extension of their business, and it was within this environment that Gorm's path began to diverge.

A wise and experienced kajira named Midice, a long-standing member of the House Runo household, took a keen interest in young Gorm. She taught him the intricate art of slavery and the nuances of human nature, profoundly shaping his understanding. It was even Midice who suggested the name Gorm Runo, honoring his Kassauan heritage and his connection to the legendary Gorm of Torvaldsland.

As a young man, Gorm chose to become a slaver, a sub-caste of the Merchant Caste, a decision that felt both natural and destined. His early experiences, guided by Midice, had prepared him well. After leaving Kassau, Gorm embarked on extensive travels, seeking adventure and fortune. His journeys took him south along the coast, then inland, where he delved into the intricacies of trade and commerce. From the coastal city of Brundisium, he ventured inland to Argentum, a city famed for its silver mines, where he honed his negotiation skills. He continued along the Argentum Road, a vital trade route, passing through Holmesk, known for its textiles and bustling slave markets. He studied the diverse cultures and customs, further developing his expertise in slave trading.

His path then led him through Teslit, a city admired for its stone architecture, and to Ar Station, a major hub where he learned about Gorean politics and forged connections with other merchants and slavers. He eventually reached the village of White Water, nestled near the confluence of the Vosk and Olni Rivers. Here, a mysterious traveler spoke of a hidden valley and the city of Lara, where the Vosk was fed by the Olni from the Thentis Mountains. Though Lara shaped him, Gorm's insatiable curiosity and a growing fascination with the classical Gorean river cities pulled him northward once more. The call of the Sardar Mountains grew stronger, eventually drawing him to the mountain city of the Soaring Herlit, a fortress near the larger city of Thentis, at the head of the Olni River.

As Gorm continued his travels northward, he became increasingly fascinated with the classical Gorean river cities, marveling at their grandeur and intricate architecture. The call of the Sardar Mountains grew stronger, drawing him inexorably towards the heart of Gor. Gorm's curiosity and desire for knowledge led him to watch, study, and learn from the diverse cultures and customs he encountered on his journey. He was a sponge, absorbing every detail, every nuance, and every technique that could aid him in his pursuit of mastery.

The Soaring Herlit's unique environment, with its harsh climate and rugged terrain, demanded adaptability and resourcefulness, qualities that Gorm possessed in abundance. His experiences in the city would shape him into the master slaver he is today, with a keen eye for detail and an unparalleled understanding of the intricate dance between master and slave.

In the city kennel, Gorm refined his approach to training kajirae, focusing on discipline, elegance, and a deep understanding of the complexities of the human psyche. His methods, though unorthodox to some, proved highly effective, earning him a reputation as one of the most skilled slavers in the region.

It was in the Soaring Herlit that Gorm truly mastered his craft. He rose swiftly to become the city's head slaver, working directly under Ubar Jake Torkelson. In this demanding environment, Gorm refined his unique methods of kennel management and developed a personal style for the maintenance and training of kajirae. His approach, which focused on discipline, elegance, and a deep understanding of the human psyche, earned him a formidable reputation throughout Gor. His years in Soaring Herlit transformed him into the master slaver he is today, a man with an unparalleled understanding of the intricate dance between master and slave, a reputation he would later carry to the founding of his own House of Runo in Caer Cadarn.

As our conversation flowed, I couldn't help but notice the pride in his voice when speaking of his city, Caer Cadarn. The city's growth, from a small settlement around the Black Tarn Tavern to the thriving free port it is today, is a testament to Gorm's vision and leadership.

His approach to slavery is multifaceted, focusing not only on the art of submission but also on the well-being of his slaves. The HOR training program, designed to prepare slaves for life in Gor, is a reflection of his commitment to excellence. It's clear that Gorm's success stems from his ability to adapt, innovate, and lead.

Gorm Runo is a central figure in the city of Caer Cadarn, serving as both the Administrator of the Freeport and the First Chair of the Merchant Caste. His House of Runo (HOR) operates as a dedicated slave training house, emphasizing a "Second Life Gorean philosophy" where participants consistently embody their Gorean roles.

Editor's Note:

The HOR's operations in Caer Cadarn are quite diverse. Beyond training, the House manages a G&S farm that specializes in distilling fine wines and spirits, with slaves actively involved in its upkeep and labor. Slaves also serve at The Black Tarn Tavern, which is part of the House of Runo's estate within Caer Cadarn.

The HOR training program focuses on preparing slaves for life in Gor through classes, lectures, and practical experience gained by serving in various cities.

As First Chair of the Merchant Caste, Gorm also helps oversee the city's market and finances, promoting merchant law and integrity as Caer Cadarn continues to grow from a slaver's house into a bustling Freeport.
