The Fire

Lady Builder Aille stood atop the wall, carefully taking measurements of the space as she prepared for her design work. The smell of charring wood wafted through the air, and she initially assumed it was just someone lighting a fire to stay warm. However, as she gazed out across the Var, her eyes landed on the island across the way, where black smoke billowed out of the windows.

Concerned, Lady Aille tucked her measurements into her robes and quickly clambered down the turret. She rushed down the stairs and out the wall, shouting a warning to anyone who might hear her. "There is a building on fire in the Var, not sure how bad but anyone able to come check it out in case something is wrong!"

Without hesitation, Lady Aille opened the big gate and sprinted out, checking briefly for any potential threats before racing to the water's edge. She scanned the area for a boat, desperate to reach the island and assess the situation. As she spotted a boat, she grimaced, recalling her dislike of boats, but climbed aboard and began searching for the oars.

Meanwhile, Lady Lillian had appeared, shouting for someone named Tahari. Lady Aille couldn't see what was happening, but she heard Lillian's frantic calls for buckets of water and her warnings to stay back. Tahari was trapped inside the burning building.

As Lady Aille rowed towards the island, she heard Tahari's weak cries for help, her voice strained from inhaling the acrid smoke. "Please? Someone?" Lady Aille's grip on the oars tightened, her sense of urgency growing. She was getting closer, but she knew every moment counted.

Lillian continued to throw buckets of water on the flames, but it seemed to have little effect. Lady Aille's heart pounded in her chest as she rowed closer to the island, her eyes fixed on the burning building. She knew she had to act fast to rescue Tahari and Tahari .

As the chaos unfolded, Lady Talora grabbed a bucket and rushed to the door, the smoke invading her veil and making it hard to breathe. She kept her head low and threw the water on the flames, momentarily retreating to grab another bucket. Tahari's desperate cries for help echoed through the air, her voice strained from the smoke.

Libbi darted into the room, her bucket heavy with water. She threw it on the flames, hearing the singeing noise as the fire momentarily lessened. Peering through the smoke, she tried to locate Tahari, her voice hoarse as she called out, "Tahari! Can you hear me?"

Lady Lillian continued to run back and forth, throwing bucket after bucket of water on the flames. Her voice was laced with desperation as she shouted, "Stay low, Tahari! Stay back!" Lady Aille , meanwhile, had arrived on the scene, nearly tripping on the bottom of her robes as she clamored out of the boat.

Lady Aille looked around, she spotted Lillian running back out from the building, breathless and carrying an empty bucket. Lillian exclaimed the girl was trapped inside and water was desperately needed.Lady Aille quickly scanned the area and spotted another bucket, which she filled with water to throw on the flames.

She also signaled to a warrior across the sands to retrieve wool cloth from the shop and bring it over. The plan was to use the thick fabric to suffocate the fire. As the women worked together to combat the blaze, Libbi pushed into the room, looking to Mistress Lillian for guidance. "Mistress, no! The Masters would kill me! Don't go in!" she warned, but Lady Lillian was resolute.

"Let's clear a path and get her out first!" Lady Lillian shouted, throwing another bucket of water. "Libbi, it's fine! Get more water!" As the flames were momentarily beaten back, Lady Lillian called out to Tahari, "Tahari! Can you get by on your own? Do you need help to move?" The fate of Tahari and the others hung in the balance as the women fought to extinguish the fire.

As the warrior rowed across the water,Lady Aille waited momentarily before throwing another bucket of water on the flames. She then unrolled the wool fabric while running back into the house, determined to smother the fire. Libbi, meanwhile, was trying to reach Tahari, calling out to her through the smoke-filled room.

"Tahari!....if I grab you, can you climb over?" Libbi asked, peering at the furniture piled up in the room. She flung another bucket of water over the furniture, hoping to prevent any hidden flames from igniting. Tahari , barely able to see or breathe, stumbled forward, desperate to escape the inferno.

Lady Lillian continued to coordinate the rescue efforts, urging everyone to keep fetching water. "Let's keep getting water!" she shouted to Lady Aille . As Lady Aille threw the wool fabric on the flames, trying to smother them, Lillian exclaimed, "Great idea!"

Talora, meanwhile, made multiple trips back and forth, fetching water and tossing it on the flames. Liberty, coughing and spluttering from the smoke, reached out and grabbed Tahari's hand. "Tahari! Give me your hand...." she urged, trying to pull Tahari to safety.

Lady Aille, shielding Tahari from the flames with the wool fabric, instructed Liberty, "Libbi, get Tahari out while I shield her from the flames!" Libbi pulled harder on Tahari's hand, encouraging her to climb over the obstacles and escape the burning building. "Yes, Mistress...Tahari, climb over!" Libbi shouted, her voice hoarse from the smoke.

As the flames were slowly being extinguished, Lady Lillian watched with a sense of pride and relief as everyone worked together seamlessly, like a well-trained team. Tahari, with Liberty's help, tumbled over the couch, her hand gripping Libby's with the last of her strength.

Lady Builder Aille carefully monitored the situation, ensuring the girls were safe as she kept the wool fabric in place, feeling it grow warm but still effective in smothering the flames. Lady Talora observed the progress, noticing the flames slowly being defeated between the wool fabric and the buckets of water.

Lady Lillian moved in, tossing another bucket of water at the base of the fire, coughing slightly from the smoke. She smacked out an ember on her skirt, her movements swift and precise. Libbi pulled Tahari to safety, dragging her out into the fresh air.

As the fire was finally brought under control, Lillian dumped another bucket of water, ensuring any remaining embers were extinguished. Tahari collapsed onto the deck, coughing and spitting up soot-stained phlegm. Lady Aille , still trying to catch her breath, instructed Lillian to check on Tahari and get some fresh air.

Libbi rushed to grab a bucket of water, returning to Tahari's side to offer her a drink. Lillian nodded, coughing, and expressed her gratitude to Lady Aille . Talora, watching Libbi and Tahari pass by, coughed and made her way out of the house, seeing that the flames were finally out.

As the Mistresses emerged from the house, coughing and covered in soot, Libbi checked on Lady Aille , calling out, "Mistress!? Are you alright?"

As they made their way to the infirmary, the group's conversation turned to the cause of the fire and the state of the damaged building. Lady Lillian suggested sending someone to inform the authorities about the incident, while Lady Aille offered to provide temporary accommodations for Tahari until her quarters could be repaired.

Libbi, still concerned about Tahari's well-being, stayed close by her side, offering words of comfort and reassurance. Talora, meanwhile, took charge of arranging for the cleanup and repair of the damaged building, ensuring that everything was taken care of efficiently.

As they approached the infirmary, the group's anxiety grew, hoping that Tahari 's injuries were not too severe. They were greeted by the infirmary staff, who quickly took Tahari in for treatment. The group waited anxiously outside, waiting for news about Tahari .

After what felt like an eternity, the physician emerged, a look of relief on her face. "Tahari will be okay," she announced. "She suffered some minor burns and smoke inhalation, but she should make a full recovery."

The group breathed a collective sigh of relief, grateful that Tahari was going to be alright. They waited for a while longer, until Tahari was settled and resting comfortably, before saying their goodbyes and heading off to attend to their respective duties.

As the group made their way up the hill, supporting Tahari , they were met by the city Slaver, Eridain, who quickly assessed the situation and took charge, lifting Tahari into a tarsk back Lady Aille helped, coughing slightly from the soot.

Libbi, still dripping wet, followed behind, watching as they made their way to the greens. Lady Aille noticed Libbi's cough and insisted that she be seen by the greens as well, but Libbi protested, not wanting to be a bother. Lady Aille reassured her it would be a quick check-up.

As they approached the greens, Lady Lady Gia , the head of the physicians caste, greeted them, and Eridain quickly explained the situation, handing Tahari over to Gia's care. The group's relief was palpable as they knew of Lady Gia's expertise, knowing she would receive the best care possible.

As Lady Gia continued to tend to Tahari's burns,Lady Aille and Eridain discussed arrangements for Tahari's care while her owner, Tusk, was away. Liberty, still wrapped in blankets, chimed in, enthusiastically suggesting that Tahari stay with her and the frog. Eridain nodded, showing that he had already extended an offer for Tahari  to stay in the kennels.

Lady Lillian watched Lady Gia work, relieved that Tahari's injuries were not more severe. She reassured Tahari , telling her not to worry about her Master's reaction, and that she would take care of it.Tahari's concerns about her Master's return were clear, but Lillian's calm demeanor helped to ease her worries.

Lady Gia continued to treat Tahari's burns, applying a soothing jelly to help ease the pain. Eridain, meanwhile, suggested that Libbi also receive a follow-up exam, eyeing her with a hint of amusement.

As the group continued to tend to Tahari's needs, Libbi reluctantly agreed to be examined by Lady Gia , still grumbling about the necessity of it. Eridain remained firm, insisting that she be checked for any potential harm from the smoke inhalation.

Lady Builder Aille helped Lillian move Tahari  to the recovery area, where Lady Gia assisted her into bed and covered her up. Lillian expressed her gratitude to Lady Gia , relieved that Tahari could stay overnight and receive the care she needed.

As Tahari drifted off to sleep, Libbi sneezed again, this time all over Eridain's boot. She apologized, looking up at him with a mischievous grin. Lillian, meanwhile, lamented the state of her charred dress, but Libbi reassured her that Mistress Aille could fix it.

Lady Gia finished tending to Tahari and invited Libbi to come for her examination, signaling that it was time for Libbi to receive a check-up as well.

As Lady Gia tended to Lady Lillian, examining her for any burns or smoke inhalation, the rest of the group waited patiently.Lady Aille sat down, taking a moment to collect herself, while Libbi continued to banter with Eridain.

Liberty, still wrapped in her blanket, teased Eridain about using her blanket to clean his boot, joking that she might as well have used her kirtle. Eridain playfully shot back, reminding her to visit Lady Gia as soon as she was done with Lillian.

Meanwhile, Lady Gia carefully examined Lillian, loosening her clothes and checking for any signs of injury. Lillian coughed periodically, her veil and hood removed as Lady Gia worked to assess her condition.

As Lady Lillian exited the examination room, she smiled and nodded at Liberty, asking how she was doing. Libb smiled back, seeming in good spirits despite her earlier ordeal.

Lady Aille, meanwhile, entered the examination room, her blackened robes a testament to her involvement in rescuing Tahari from the fire. Lady Gia greeted her warmly, inviting her to sit on the bed for an examination.

As Lady Gia began her examination of Lady Aille, Libbi watched with interest, still wrapped in her blanket and trying to stay warm. Eridain stood nearby, keeping a watchful eye on Libbi as she waited for her own examination.

The atmosphere in the infirmary was calm and efficient, with Lady Gia moving smoothly from one patient to the next. Despite the chaos of the fire, the group seemed in good hands, with Lady Gia's skilled care and attention helping to ease their worries.

As the group prepared to leave, Libbi maintained her pathetic facade, sniffling and gazing up at Eridain with a pitiful expression. However, she was secretly pleased with herself, having successfully manipulated the situation to her advantage.

Meanwhile, Lady Gia bid the group farewell, thanking them for their kindness and generosity. Lady Lillian handed her two silver coins, one for the payment and an additional one as a tip, which Lady Gia gratefully accepted.

As the group departed, Lady Aille led the way, walking towards the door and out into the cold. Eridain followed, mentioning to Lady Gia that he would soon bring in some new slaves for their exams.

Libbi, still wrapped in her blanket, trailed behind Eridain, her eyes fixed on him with a mischievous glint. She was looking forward to milking her "illness" for all it was worth, and Eridain's dry expression suggested that he was well aware of her antics.

Editor's Note: In the Chronicles of Gor setting, a Gorean city-state's fire response would likely be organized based on ancient Greek and Roman methods, with some modifications to fit the unique cultural and societal context of Gor. Here's a possible description:

Preparations

  • Each city-state would have a designated fire-watch, consisting of trained and armed guards who patrol the streets at night, equipped with buckets, ropes, and other firefighting tools.
  • Citizens would be trained in basic firefighting techniques, such as forming bucket brigades and using wet blankets to smother flames.
  • Public buildings, such as temples and market halls, would have designated fire-fighting teams, composed of slaves or lower-caste citizens.

Alarm and Response

  • In the event of a fire, a designated alarm would be sounded, such as a horn or a drumbeat, to alert the citizens and the fire-watch.
  • The fire-watch would rush to the scene, followed by citizen volunteers, who would form bucket brigades to pass water from nearby sources, such as wells or fountains.
  • Trained firefighters would attempt to contain the fire using wet blankets, sand, or other extinguishing agents.

Organization and Command

  • The city's Ubar, or High Council, would appoint a Fire Commander, responsible for coordinating the response efforts and ensuring public safety.
  • The Fire Commander would be assisted by a team of experienced firefighters, who would direct the bucket brigades, operate firefighting equipment, and make tactical decisions.

Slave and Lower-Caste Involvement

  • Slaves and lower-caste citizens would play a crucial role in firefighting efforts, as they would be responsible for forming bucket brigades, operating pumps, and performing other physically demanding tasks.
  • In return for their service, slaves might receive rewards, such as improved living conditions, extra rations, or even manumission.

Post-Incident Procedures

  • After the fire has been extinguished, the Fire Commander would conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze and identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
  • The city-state would provide assistance to affected citizens, including temporary housing, food, and other necessities.

This system would be shaped by the cultural, social, and economic context of Gor, with its strict caste system, emphasis on civic duty, and reliance on slave labor.
